Andrew F. Maunz Sworn in as EEOC Legal Counsel

Maunz will oversee internal and external policy for EEOC

Andrew F. Maunz has been sworn in as EEOC Legal Counsel, and will oversee internal and external policy for the agency. Maunz will be replacing Ketan D. Bhirud, who will begin his new role as deputy general counsel at the Department of Homeland Security.

Since July 2019, Maunz was worked as special assistant to EEOC Chair Janet Dhillon. He previously served as a senior attorney in the Office of the General Counsel of the Social Security Administration (SSA) where he provided legal advance on employment and administrative law matters. He also represented the SSA in litigation in federal courts and administrative proceedings.

In 2018, he was nominated to be the Vice Chair of the Merit Systems Protection Board; however, Maunz’s nomination failed by a vote of 7-7 to advance to the Senate’s Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

The EEOC’s Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) serves as the principal advisor to the Commission on enforcement matters. OLC drafts regulations, guidance and technical assistance documents, conducts outreach and education efforts, and coordinates on behalf of the EEOC on all federal issues affecting equal employment opportunity. OLC also represents the Commission in defensive litigation and manages the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) program for the agency.

Maunz received his undergraduate degree from Miami University in Oxford, OH, and graduated magna cum laude at the University Of Toledo College Of Law.
